FC Co-President from Southwest Career and Technical Academy placed at the FCCLA competition and plans to attend FIDM.
It took me a second to process that I had actually won the scholarship. But when it finally hit me, I couldn't stop smiling.
Tell us a bit about yourself: At my school, I am able to study fashion design as a program area. I am working on a five-piece collection for my senior project.
Tell us about the FCCLA competition in which you placed: I competed in both the Fashion Design and Fashion Construction events, and I placed silver in both. In the Fashion Design event, I was required to create a six-piece collection, have a label, and explain a target market, retailer, and price. I used my collection from my senior project, and the two physical outfits I was required to bring were also from my collection.
What was your reaction when you found out that you won? It took me a second to process that I had actually won the scholarship. But when it finally hit me, I couldn't stop smiling.
How did you get involved in Fashion Club at your high school? I was partially involved in the club last year, and when it came time to appoint a new president, I was given the opportunity because I am only one of the two students who applied and was accepted into FIDM. I wasn't quite sure if I was going to be able to handle the role, but I've had a lot of fun learning about the events at FIDM and helping the other club members out.
What kinds of activities do you do at your Fashion Club meetings? Our meetings are usually very simple. We talk about some of the current scholarships that are available involving design or fashion and about some of the events happening at FIDM and at stores. We also talk about the senior projects, explaining some of the problems we've come into and we attempt to help each other.
What is one of your proudest accomplishments? I am most proud that I have gotten so much more comfortable at doing oral presentations and speaking in front of people. I am still not where I want to be, but I'm so happy that I don't panic and breakdown anymore.
Do you have plans to attend FIDM? I applied and was accepted into FIDM my junior year, after attending the DEBUT Runway Show.
What are your career goals? I don't really have set goals yet. As long as I'm able to continue sewing, I'll be happy.
