Giuliana Marafioti

I'm going to get my Bachelor's Degree from FIDM in Business Management, then start a cosmetic and skincare line with my sister.

Tell us a little about yourself: I am a senior at Bishop McDevitt High School in Wyncote, Pennsylvania. I have always been into fashion and beauty. My Nonna is a seamstress, so I was always exposed to sewing machines and always wanted to learn more. I went through the different periods of my life thinking about what I wanted to be when I grow up. At first I wanted to be a designer, an accessories designer, and then a stylist. After I went to a few classes in New York I finally knew where I belonged. I wanted to go into public relations for the fashion industry. Once I received the FIDM catalog of majors, I realized what else is out there. I never knew there was a major for the beauty industry. This major stood out to me the most. I've grown up around makeup my whole life and knew this would be the best fit for me. I have also started my own beauty YouTube channel for something fun to do in my free time.

How did you get involved in Fashion Club at your high school? A FIDM representative was at my high school on college night and was telling me about the different scholarships you can receive. From there I brought a proposal to the administration and started the first ever Fashion Club at my high school.

What kinds of activities do you do at your Fashion Club meetings? During our meetings we mostly plan the fashion show for the year. We also make candy grams for fundraisers and create posters and flyers to hang around the school for upcoming fundraisers and events.

What is one of your proudest accomplishments? My proudest accomplishment happened this past December. I was chosen as the Pennsylvania winner for the youth art month flag design contest.

What item in your wardrobe is your favorite right now? My favorite item in my wardrobe right now would have to be my Free People denim jacket.

Tell us what went into your decision to attend FIDM to study Beauty Industry Merchandising & Marketing: I chose FIDM as my school because it felt right there. Every since I was younger I knew I was going to a fashion school whether it be FIT or FIDM. I grew up around my Nonna who is a seamstress and that was where my passion started. I wanted to be a designer for a long time but things obviously changed. When my advisor called me for the first time, junior year, I have never been so excited in my life. I felt as though FIDM actually wanted me at this school. Initially, I really wanted to go into public relations for the fashion industry, but changed my mind when I received the FIDM brochure. As I was looking through it, I saw they had a Beauty Industry Merchandising & Marketing major. I knew that was the right major for me.

What do you want to pursue in terms of your career? My sister and I are both crazy about makeup and want to be in the industry one day. I'm hoping to get my Bachelor's Degree from FIDM in Business Management. After that I would love to start my own cosmetic and skincare line with my sister. I know this will take a lot of work but I wouldn't want to do it with anyone else but her.

Anything else you’d like to share? I am very excited to be starting a new chapter of my life at FIDM in the fall and seeing where that takes me.
