Leon HS Fashion Club Clothing Drive Brings in 1K Items
FC President Caldwell Harris tells us about her experience leading the program.
In late January, Leon High School Fashion & Design Club, in collaboration with Student Government, organized a school-wide clothing drive. Over the course of 2.5 weeks, we collected over 1,000 items of clothing.
This initiative assisted the mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters, to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported 1-to-1 relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.
After a month of planning, attending meetings and selecting a charitable organization to benefit from the drive, we started collecting.
Our local Big Brothers Big Sisters chapter was very helpful, and provided a big purple bin for collecting the clothes. After arranging a bin drop-off schedule with them, all that was left to do was encourage students, faculty, and the community to donate gently used clothing items.
At our club meetings, we discussed marketing tactics, encouraged members to donate, and implemented the guidelines for a successful drive, which included:
• designing posters and flyers
• using BOTH our club and personal social media accounts to promote the drive
• scheduling regular school-wide announcements
• assessing the quality of clothing suitable for donation
Because of our partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters, we also had the opportunity to film a television commercial, which was highly valuable because it provided yet another platform for the clothing drive project to increase its sustainability, while also encouraging teens in our area to become involved in community organizations.
The clothing drive was a highly successful Fashion Club project!
Next, we are working on uploading a video to YouTube that will be a slideshow of the year, as well as the fashion show we did, plus behind the scenes coverage.
