Hammond HS Fashion Club Hosts Fashion Week

Their themes included '90s Day, Pattern Day, and Denim Day.

This is Jenaye Brooks-Rivers, sophomore and President of Hammond High School FIDM Fashion Club in Columbia, Maryland. We are known for our school spirit in Howard County. When we have our homecoming week, everyone goes all out. So I thought why not have another type of spirit week—a Fashion Week!

We came up with the themes. Monday was ‘90s Day; Tuesday was Pattern Day; Wednesday was Hammond’s Best Dressed (all staff and students were encouraged to dress up); Thursday was Denim Day; and Friday was Class Color Day.

One of the best turnouts was Hammond’s Best Dressed and Denim Day. In fact, the best thing about the whole experience was the participation! We spread the word through social media, email, flyers, posters, and announcements. And we raised $245 for Hammond’s Annual Fashion show scheduled for April 21st, by selling "HaHs FashionWeek 2016” bracelets for a dollar each.

Our Principal, Marcy Leonard, is an advocate for dressing for success. Our saying is, "Where people are important." I think this ties in with dressing for success because it shows how important we are as a school with individual style.

We also did a clothing swap on the last day of the Fashion Week, with gently used clothes donated by students and staff. All clothes were a dollar. The turnout was less than we would have liked due to spring sports, so we’re going to have another one soon!

Hammond never had a Fashion Club before this year, and I realize now that this is something that I want to do for my career. I want to major in business and create my own clothing line. I want to be a professional stylist, and be behind the scenes of photo shoots for commercials, TV shows or movies, being a wardrobe stylist or photographer.

I want to thank you for your time, and thank you for letting me have the opportunity to tell you a little bit about FIDM Fashion Club in Columbia, Maryland.
